We are learning that the Philadelphia Department of Public Health is urging patients from three dental practices to seek screening for HIV and Hepatitis. The three facilities, all Trieu Family Dental Clinics, were found to have been following unsafe procedures, ones that could have potentially infected patients.

At The Weitz Firm, LLC, we know that the last thing you ever expect to have to deal with is getting injured or becoming ill due to the negligence of a healthcare professional. If you need a medical malpractice lawyer Philadelphia, call us today so we can work on securing the compensation you deserve.

What Is Going On Here

Working on an anonymous tip, the health department sent investigators into the clinics to observe their practices. What they found was not good. They were able to observe unsafe infection control measures, including:

  • Inappropriate sterilization and reprocessing of equipment
  • Errors in safe injection measures

All three of their clinics were closed on December 7, 2018, and the health department is asking anyone who used the clinics from January 1, 2017, to see their doctor for HIV and Hepatitis screenings.

“None of these clinics will be allowed to re-open until the Health Department is satisfied that all unsafe practices have been remedied,” the department said in a press release.

Mistakes Occur

All of us know, in the back of our minds, that there are risks anytime we get a medical procedure done. However, most people do not realize that medical errors are the third leading cause of death in the United States, killing around 250,000 people each year. Many millions more survive these mistakes and are left reeling with the consequences:

  • Follow up medical procedures and surgeries
  • Temporary or permanent medical problems
  • High medical costs
  • Emotional and psychological damages

We know that these medical mistakes can occur when any healthcare professional is negligent or careless in their duties. How many healthcare professionals do you or your family see each year?

  • Doctors
  • Nurses
  • Optometrists
  • Dentists
  • Paramedics
  • Pharmacists
  • And more

Oftentimes, these people are overworked and fatigued. Other times, they are undertrained for the jobs they have been asked to do. Some common mistakes that are made include:

  • Errors when dispensing medications
  • Surgical mistakes
  • Diagnosing errors
  • Failure to treat a condition
  • Healthcare-acquired infections
  • Birth injuries
  • Medical record mistakes
