Birth Complications Are Reason For Medical Malpractice

Women have it hard when it comes to medical treatment, especially if women are having children. Women are expected to see the doctor every year for yearly checkups starting in their teens or early 20’s. Women are also supposed to have several checkups during their pregnancy to make sure that they and the baby are on track for staying healthy. All these appointments take time and money. Not everyone has the luxury of paying for these procedures and the current attack on Planned Parenthood, which provides these services for free or at a very low cost, leaves women with very little choice. It also burdens doctors if women do not have many options to get help. But that shouldn’t matter when a doctor is providing a service to any patient. Doctors should provide a certain standard of care. If this standard is not provided then you need to consult with an attorney of medical malpractice.

How To Tell If You Are Not Getting Standard Of Care

It is a fine line of trusting and scrutinizing your health care provider. You want to trust them because they know more than you about your situation. However, doctors and medical staff are just human. They have bad and challenging days. The problem with being human as a doctor is that your poor choice can negative or fatal repercussions for your patient. Sometimes doctors become so comfortable with their job that they forget to treat each patient individually. This was the case for a pregnant woman who sued for $19.5 million and won.

The woman filed a suit against Lackawanna County health care professionals including the Wilkes-Barre General Hospital, OB-GYN Associates, Moses Taylor Hospital, and two additional doctors. She is suing because she was not treated with a standard of care necessary for a pregnant woman. Instead, it was found that the medical staff was reckless s in handling her situation which caused her son to be born with a hypoxic brain injury which resulted in her son on a breathing tube unable to walk or crawl.

The woman visited the doctors 19 days before her pregnancy complaining of ailments such as a headache, dizziness, nausea, back pain, hypertension, and lack of fetal movement. Instead of directing the woman to a hospital or some other caretaker, the on-call doctor called to tell her to take some Tylenol for a headache, Bengay for back pain, and go on a bland food diet. Even if you weren’t a medical professional, you can see that there is something reckless about a decision like this.
